What if I get a counteroffer?
Counteroffers are almost always a way for employers to temporarily stop their company from losing talent, and you don’t want to be a “temporary” fix. Here are 9 important facts to consider about counteroffers:-
Usually, your employer will make a counteroffer out of necessity – or risk losing business. However, after a counteroffer is accepted, an employer typically questions your loyalty, is uncomfortable with the raise promised, and will search for your replacement at a cheaper price, at his leisure, on his own terms.
-
If accepting a counteroffer due to a raise in salary, your loyalty will be in question. In your employer’s mind, what would stop you from accepting an even better offer if it shows up? Typically, in this situation, you’re kept until a replacement can be found.
-
When promotion time comes, employers typically look at others whom they feel are more loyal. Counteroffer acceptance now can mean a lagging career later.
-
When cutbacks are necessary, employers typically begin with the higher paid and less loyal employees. In employer minds, accepting a counteroffer places you in both these categories: disloyal and overcompensated. These employees are typically the first to go.
-
Where is the added salary coming from? All companies have wage and salary guidelines that must be followed. Is this simply your next raise given early?
-
Money isn’t usually the root cause of desiring a change. The same circumstances that now cause you to consider a change will repeat themselves in the future, even if you accept a counteroffer. If you believe a change is what you need, stick to your guns.
-
Statistics show that if you accept a counteroffer, the probability of voluntarily leaving in six months or being let go within one year is extremely high.
-
Strong personal relationships with your peer group often are damaged after word gets out about your counteroffer.
-
You deserve a company that treats you right from day one. What type of company do you work for if you have to threaten to resign before they give you what you’re worth?
-
“Remember this: companies concerned with the best interests of the employees rarely make counteroffers. Only those companies that place corporate interests ahead of personal interests are likely to make counteroffers…
Why do counteroffers happen? Simple. Because while you have been planning to leave, the company has probably not been planning for you to leave…
Counteroffers are almost always temporary! It's a temporary "solution" provided by your boss so that she can remain in control. It buys her time. Time to get your project finished. Time to get you to tell others in the company about all those key areas that only you know. Time to find someone to replace you. Time to train someone to replace you. And time for your boss to decide when you will leave the company. Don’t buy it. Ever.”
